Graduation Class of 2016

I cannot even express how I am thankful for the emotional, financial and any kind of support from my parents (Tin Win and Min Zaw Oo), family,(Pwar Pwar, and Ko gyi U San Naing Oo) professors, friends (Dianne Montiel (most special one), Chungdhak Jhaming Tsang, Sonia Kabra) and relatives. Withoud my parents, I will not be here who I am today. I love you <3. I came to Earlham with a ray of h ope to look out for an answer of "how shall I live?". Earlham has provided me an opportunity to discover myself, my passion, and most importantly the importance of genuinity and honesty. I am proud of our class of 2016 and am looking forward to meeting each of you at one point in life.
Thank you Ko Chris Lee for all of your help and support for my parents and uncle couple to be able to attend my graduation. Thank you, Ko Gyi. During those four years, there are two important persons, Aunty Hmwe (also Baba Robert) and Miemie Khin Lay(also U Khin Maung Lay), who always help me with anything I need. And Ko Poe Thar for always being the best. Thanks to Aunty Cynthia Lee (also Ko latt )for always helping me with shopping, money transfer and good advises. Thank you, all.

Journal 5 - Life in Philadelphia

I always thought that off-campus program would be so much easier than regular school semester. Believe me, it is not! Working full time from 9 to 5 is pretty tiring, plus evening student worker shift and evening class. Some days, I would get home by 10 or 11 pm if I had to study at coffeeshop afterward. My two internships are good but I am not that excited anymore. My mood swings are like a roller coaster and currently, they are downward, maybe mainly because of my recent health problems.
In this Journal, I want to talk about how I recognized some of my privileges through my internship experience. Let me start off with my internship experience at PHMC care clinic which provides primary care for underserved population. My supervisor established Diabetes community including Diabetes Academy education program and community events  at PHMC care clinic. During my time at PHMC, I got an opportunity to plan and organize Diabetes Academy classes and its community events. I got a chance to meet people from different background with various health problems. My first impression on the patients was “Wow, they are really hard to deal with.” During the class, some of the patients would interrupt when someone’s talking, answered their phone loudly, got mad at the educator for not giving them the chance to ask questions ( they asked a lot of questions and there’s no time for all of the questions within one hour of class), so on and on. I was frustrated that patients did not pay respect to the educator and their classmates, so was my supervisor. One day, I and my supervisor talked about how they do not have basic manners and morality. And my supervisor said that some of the patients had mental issues and they are easily irritable because of their background and health issues. I did not think about their emotional instability due to what they went through in their life. I recognized some of my privileges by communicating with our patients at PHMC. Recognizing my privileges changed some of my perspectives on patients. I try to be more patient and flexible with some of the patients. I start listening to their voice and trying to get to know their life. They are very honest. That’s one thing I cannot find easily in this world. They tell me what they don’t like or what they like. There’s no pretentious attitude. They are ordinary people who have certain hatred, anger, jealousy and ego. They also have certain love kindness, and generosity. Working with underserved population is not easy. But, I feel pure joy and satisfaction when I am trying to help their life improve. I am very happy when our patients’ A1C ( average blood sugar measurement for the past two to three months) go down. During my internship at PHMC,  I took them to chinatown, showed them the cheapest grocery store that has fresh fruit and vegetable and showed them how to buy and eat healthy. We all had a great time. During the trip to chinatown, I remember when one of the patients asked me “ is this where your people are?” I gave her a big smile. There is no supremacy or prejudice between us. I am Burmese (who’s usually seen as Chinese), they are mostly black, some are spanish, some are white. We provide the service and they appreciate it. We share good things and bad things. We celebrate our imperfections and  differences. I wish the world will be that simple. But, it is not.
The field trip to chestnut hill gave me a lot thoughts about difference and inequality. I cannot imagine how I will survive long hours on bus to get education. However, compared to thousands of children in Myanmar who cannot go to school and are used as child laborers, the kids I have seen on the bus have their own privileges. And, I see the fluid concept of privilege.

Journal 3 - Life in Philadelphia

Week 6 - 09/17/2015
Student Intern at U Penn AIDS Clinical Trial Unit :)
Time flies really fast. I have been in Philadelphia for a month. I have been able to adjust myself well with the city, classes and two internships. I am happy with my internship placements ,and I am very proud to be a part of think tank at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Working in the clinical trial setting gives me different perspectives about medical research and clinical practice. In the biomedical research world, thousands of scientists and researchers are working really hard in the laboratory to find new discoveries and treatments to cure diseases for homo sapiens by studying on animals and human. The treatment for diseases including Hepatitis C, HIV and cancer comes from the animal or human studies in the laboratory. AIDS clinical trial unit at U Penn is a place where the discovery from the lab is delivered to the patients with HIV by improving the quality of their lives. I am currently involving in the gene therapy study for HIV patients ,and I was extremely fascinated by the science behind the gene therapy treatment. When I was reading the protocol of the study, I was very excited about the usage of autologous genetically-modified T-cells in the study. It was fascinating to see all of the materials that I learned from science classes are applicable in this study. I felt the pure happiness on that day , and I tried harder to understand the mechanisms in details before I shadowed my supervisor to see the patient who would be receiving the first gene therapy treatment. My perspectives about medical research has changed on the day I saw the patient. The gene-therapy treatment may appear to the patient as a clear liquid solution in a small bag. When she was asking questions about the study, I was speaking science language in my head ( it’s a really amazing study in which your own white blood cells’ separated via leukapheresis are genetically engineered by using zinc finger nuclease which will help resulting in knocking off CCR5 receptors, preventing from entering HIV to enter the immune cells). While I was thinking of the science inside the small bag in front of me, my supervisor spoke human language and gave her simplest explanation about the study. He made sure that the patient understood the procedure and provided the best professional and personal care. I learned more about the patient’s life and situations from the conversation between my supervisor and patient. I learned the importance of patient interaction and learned how to put myself in their shoe and try to see the patient's’ side. I realized that the study was more than investigating science. Sometimes, some scientists tend to forget the fact that the studies are dealing with human subjects. Sometimes, they are very excited about science and they forget to pay enough attention to patient’s life, resulting in unnecessary miscommunication and misunderstanding. Working at U Penn AIDS clinical trial widen my horizons and open my eyes. Being an intern, I get a chance to see the unit from outsider perspective. Being a science student, I get to put myself in scientist’s shoe and feel the science. Being an observer,  I get to learn more about patient's’ life and their perspectives on the studies. This experience of putting myself in three different types of shoe enlighten me about clinical practice and medical research.
To sum up, I have been very busy with two internships, two classes and one job. I am happy with my busy schedule. I turned 21 on Oct 4 ( I am so legal now) and my supervisor from PHMC took me out for dinner and surprised me with BD cake. I am very glad that all of my supervisors are treating very nice to me. I wish I can stop the time so that I can enjoy the city as much as I want.
